ENDWELL, N.Y. — The death toll has risen to six following a devastating early morning fire at the Knights Inn in Endwell, according to New York State Police. Officials say the identities of the victims will be released at a later time as the investigation continues.
Authorities confirmed that at least two fatalities were initially reported after the fire broke out early morning, before the number later increased to six as recovery efforts continued at the scene.
The fire was reported at approximately 6:01 a.m. at the Knights Inn located at 2603 East Main Street in the Town of Union. Responding crews found heavy black smoke coming from the front of the building and active flames in the rear upon arrival.
Firefighters from multiple departments worked urgently to bring the blaze under control, including the Endwell Fire Department, Vestal Fire Department, West Corners Fire, Union Center Fire, and the Union Volunteer Emergency Squad. Law enforcement agencies including the Broome County Sheriff’s Office, Endicott Police Department, and New York State Police also responded to assist.
Emergency officials said a total of 37 households and 73 individuals have been displaced as a result of the fire. At least two people were transported to Wilson Medical Center for treatment, though further details on their conditions have not been released.
Images from the scene showed intense flames engulfing portions of the structure and thick black smoke rising over the area, with significant damage reported along the side of the building closest to the roadway.
While authorities have not officially released all victim names, family members have identified some of those lost in the tragedy, including Dominique Cruz and her beloved three children, as well as Michelle Woolfolk, among others, as notifications continue and the full toll of the fire becomes clearer.
Officials emphasized that the cause of the fire remains under active investigation.
