A quiet neighborhood in Columbus, Ohio, was rocked by tragedy Wednesday evening after a suspected murder-suicide inside an apartment left two people dead, leaving residents stunned and investigators searching for answers.
According to the Columbus Division of Police, officers responded around 7:30 p.m. to reports of a shooting at The Charles at Riggins Run apartment complex located at 5286 Applebaugh Street near Hilliard. Upon arrival, officers entered the apartment and discovered two individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene by approximately 7:48 p.m.
Authorities later identified the deceased as Ashley Messner and Shaun Stevens. Preliminary findings from investigators indicate the incident is believed to be a murder-suicide. Police say early evidence suggests Stevens fatally shot Messner before turning the weapon on himself. At this time, investigators say there are no additional suspects believed to be involved.
The shocking incident has deeply unsettled residents of the apartment complex and surrounding neighborhood, an area many describe as peaceful and quiet with very little serious criminal activity. Several neighbors expressed disbelief that such a violent tragedy could happen in a community where residents are familiar with one another and crime is rarely a concern.
Following the discovery, officers immediately secured the apartment and began an extensive investigation. Detectives spent hours processing the scene, gathering forensic evidence, interviewing neighbors, and working to establish a timeline leading up to the deadly incident.
Authorities have not yet released information regarding what may have led to the fatal confrontation, and investigators continue examining evidence as part of the ongoing case.
The tragic deaths of Ashley Messner and Shaun Stevens have left family members, friends, and members of the Columbus community mourning as they struggle to process the heartbreaking loss.
Police are asking anyone with relevant information to cooperate as the investigation remains active.
