With profound sadness, family, friends, and members of the Marion County community are mourning the tragic loss of James Cherry, 39, whose life ended following a fatal deputy-involved shooting Tuesday afternoon in Marion County, Florida.
According to authorities, deputies with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office were called around 2:26 p.m. to a home in the 14900 block of Southwest 35th Avenue Road after receiving a report of a domestic disturbance.
Investigators said James went to the residence to confront his estranged wife and attempted to persuade her to allow him inside, but she refused. A third party who was speaking with the woman over the phone reportedly overheard the situation and became concerned for her safety, leading them to call 911.
When a deputy arrived at the scene, officials said the deputy made contact with James in an effort to gather information about the reported disturbance. During the encounter, investigators said James pulled out a firearm and ignored repeated commands to drop the weapon.
Authorities said James then turned toward the deputy while armed, prompting the deputy to fire his weapon and strike him.
After the shooting, the deputy secured the scene and began providing medical aid to James until emergency personnel with Marion County Fire Rescue arrived. James was transported to a local hospital in critical condition, where he later died from his injuries.
