Authorities said Gilbert was driving a 2019 Toyota Camry when he bypassed the Wye Barricade secure entrance at the Hanford site. Investigators reported that the vehicle was traveling at speeds estimated between 80 and 100 mph before continuing into the restricted area.
According to officials, Gilbert entered the oncoming lanes to avoid the security checkpoint and continued north in the southbound lanes of Route 4. A Hanford Patrol pickup truck responding to the security breach was then struck head-on approximately four miles north of the gate.
The impact caused severe damage to both vehicles. Gilbert suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Two Hanford Patrol officers inside the pickup truck were injured and transported to a local hospital, where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
