With profound sadness, family, friends, and members of the Kawkawlin Township community are mourning the tragic loss of Herbert “Herb” Stager, 53, whose life ended following a devastating motorcycle crash on M-13/South Huron Road in Kawkawlin Township, Michigan, on Wednesday, July 8, 2026.
Herb’s unexpected passing has left his loved ones heartbroken as they grieve the loss of a life taken far too soon. Family and friends are remembering him, cherishing the moments they shared, and honoring the memories and impact he leaves behind.
According to the Bay County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded at approximately 5:37 p.m. to the intersection of M-13/South Huron Road and Old Kawkawlin Road after receiving reports of a serious two-vehicle crash.
When deputies arrived, they found a 2009 Lincoln MKX that had collided with a 1982 Suzuki motorcycle. Herb, who was operating the motorcycle, was found lying in the middle of the northbound lanes while bystanders were performing CPR in an effort to save his life.
Despite emergency efforts, Herb succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities said a preliminary investigation found that the Lincoln MKX, driven by an 81-year-old man, was stopped at the stop sign on Old Kawkawlin Road before entering M-13. Deputies said the vehicle moved forward into the northbound lanes while the driver attempted to see approaching traffic.
The vehicle entered the path of Herb’s motorcycle, and the driver did not see him before the collision occurred. Deputies also said Herb was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision remains ongoing as authorities continue working to determine the full details of the tragic incident.
