With profound sadness and heavy hearts, family, friends, and members of the Albany community are mourning the tragic death of Marquis Kentrell Barney, whose life ended on July 18, 2026, while in custody at the Dougherty County Jail in Albany, Georgia.
According to the Dougherty County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 9:50 p.m., jail staff discovered Barney unresponsive inside his cell. Officials said Barney was alone in the cell at the time and that no foul play is suspected.
Authorities reported that evidence indicates Barney attempted to take his own life. He was transported to Phoebe Memorial Hospital, where medical personnel later pronounced him deceased at approximately 10:31 p.m.
Following his passing, Sheriff Terron Hayes requested that the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) conduct an independent investigation into the incident. Although authorities have stated that there are no signs of foul play, the investigation will examine the circumstances surrounding Barney’s death.
Marquis Barney had been held at the Dougherty County Jail for 296 days while facing multiple charges, including forgery, obstruction of law enforcement officers, identity theft fraud, failure to appear, probation violation, and other related holds.
