William Harry Bailey, 71, Dies in Tragic Boating Incident at Diamond Lake, Oregon

A family trip to Diamond Lake ended in tragedy on Saturday, July 18, 2026, after William Harry Bailey, 71, of Bethalto, Illinois, died following a boating incident in Douglas County, Oregon.

According to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, emergency responders were called to Diamond Lake at approximately 2:17 p.m. after receiving a report that a person had fallen overboard from a pontoon boat and disappeared beneath the water.

Bailey was visiting the area with family members for a reunion. Earlier that day, the family rented a pontoon boat to enjoy time together on the lake. Deputies said Bailey and his sister moved to the front of the boat to take a photograph when the bow dipped into the water, causing the boat to shift.

Both Bailey and his sister lost their balance and fell into the lake. Witnesses told authorities that Bailey pushed his sister away from the moving boat to help prevent her from being struck. In the process, Bailey fell directly in front of the pontoon boat, which passed over him. He briefly resurfaced before disappearing beneath the water.

Family members immediately began searching for Bailey and called 911. Deputies, firefighters, and emergency crews responded and searched the area where he was last seen. Divers with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office later located and recovered Bailey’s body from the lake.

The Douglas County Medical Examiner’s Office was notified, and authorities expressed their condolences to Bailey’s family and friends following the heartbreaking incident.

Several agencies assisted with the emergency response, including Diamond Lake Resort, Central Douglas Fire & Rescue, Oregon State Police, Umpqua Valley Ambulance, REACH Air Medical Services, and the Oregon State Marine Board.

The incident remains under investigation as authorities continue working to determine the full circumstances surrounding the tragic boating accident.
