Deonti Charly was killed and another man was injured after multiple masked shooters opened fire into a crowd gathered near local food trucks early Sunday morning in Prichard, according to the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to reports of gunfire around 3:45 a.m. near Fry Daddy, located at 405 S. Wilson Ave. Authorities said a large crowd had gathered in the area when multiple masked individuals approached and began firing.
Upon arrival, deputies found Charly suffering from multiple gunshot wounds behind the business near a vacant building in the 400 block of East Main Street. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators said a second victim, identified as Ken Reed, was taken by private vehicle to a local hospital. Reed suffered multiple gunshot wounds and is receiving treatment for injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.
Detectives with the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit and crime scene investigators responded to both the shooting location and the hospital as part of the investigation.
Authorities said approximately 25 spent shell casings were recovered from the scene, along with a firearm and a cellphone. Charly’s vehicle, a tan 2006 Ford Taurus, was also impounded as investigators continue gathering evidence.
According to preliminary witness statements, several shots were fired before a light-colored SUV, possibly a Jeep or Dodge Durango, was seen leaving the area eastbound on East Main Street.
Investigators have obtained surveillance footage from nearby businesses and are working to collect additional video and information from witnesses. The shooting itself was not captured on available surveillance footage.
