Family, friends, and members of the Anderson community are grieving the heartbreaking loss of Jerry Martin Ellis, 73, whose life ended following a tragic accidental apartment fire in Anderson County, South Carolina, early Sunday morning.

According to the Anderson County Coroner’s Office, first responders were called shortly after 5 a.m. to a reported fire at a residence on Jonathans Joy Circle in Anderson. When emergency crews arrived, Jerry was found deceased inside an apartment.
Officials said a preliminary investigation determined that Jerry, who was blind, was inside his home when an oven was accidentally turned on, causing his jacket to catch fire. The coroner’s office said his cause of death was smoke inhalation secondary to thermal burns, and his death was ruled accidental.
The circumstances surrounding the fire continue to be reviewed by the Anderson County Coroner’s Office and the Anderson County Fire Department Headquarters.
