With profound sadness and heavy hearts, family, friends, and members of the Harris County community are mourning the tragic loss of Jonathan Mata, 18, whose life ended following a shooting early Sunday morning near the North Freeway in Harris County, Texas.
According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a business in the 14900 block of North Freeway near Airtex after receiving reports of a shooting. When authorities arrived, they discovered two individuals who had been shot.
Jonathan Mata was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. A second victim, a 20-year-old, was also taken to the hospital and remains in fair condition.
Investigators said the suspect fled the scene in a vehicle following the shooting. With assistance from a witness and the Houston Police Department, authorities were able to locate the vehicle and identify the driver as Juan Lopez. Harris County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Detectives later charged Lopez with murder in connection with the incident.
